BORN AND BUILT IN LENAWEE COUNTY

HOW SHE WAS BUILT

3rd Generation Local

Tamaris was the first-born and only granddaughter of Mr. & Mrs. Warren Stultz.  Warren & Pauline were dedicated life-long members of the historic First Baptist Church on Broad Street in Adrian, MI.

Warren retired from Tecumseh Products in the late 80's and Pauline was an amazing homemaker, mother, and flawless grandmother. She taught Tamaris to bake, can, and make homemade jam. And NO ONE could make Kraft Macaroni & Cheese from the box like Grandma Stultz!  In fact, the legacy still continues to this day. Grandpa Stultz had a passion for collecting Bradford Exchange plates and glass paperweights, which Tamaris proudly displays in her law office.

Tamaris is also blessed to be the first born granddaughter of the late Russell "Honest Russ" Henagan SR. Who spent many a day with his cigar hanging from his mouth, teaching Tamaris the importance of unconditionally loving people and meeting them where they are at in life.

Bixby Baby

Tamaris entered into this world at Emma L. Bixby Hospital on May 2, 1973.  Being of mixed race was a challenge for families in the 1970's. But Tamaris was blessed with  an amazing set of grandparents who overcame their biases and loved her unconditionally.  Her birth was  an unexpected blessing that helped the family open their eyes to cultural awareness.

As a toddler, she loved taking walks with Grandma and balancing on the high curb outside St Joseph's Catholic Church on Ormsby Street, staring in  family movies filmed on Grandpa's 8mm home movie camera.and singing and dancing to the off key country songs from Grandpa's guitar, Tamaris' favorite song to sing at karaoke is Harper Valley PTA by Jeannie C. Riley.

Adrian Student

Tamaris attended school in Adrian, Michigan. She was a student of Adrian Headstart, Garfield Elementary School, Drager Middle School, and an honor student  at Adrian High School (Class of 1991).

Unfortunately, her time in the foster care system caused her to leave Adrian Schools at the end of her sophomore year. Tamaris was moved around the state to multiple group homes in other counties resulting in her inability to earn high school credits for graduation.

None the less, once she became an adult, she took the G.E.D test and passed with flying colors, in the top 3% of the state.  No doubt, attributed to her strong educational foundation in Lenawee County. Coming full circle, Tamaris now serves on the Adrian Public Schools Board of Trustees, helping others get the quality education that they deserve.

Back for More

Tamaris spent the first 15 years of adulthood healing from the scars of childhood and raising her own family. At age 35, she was ready to make the longterm commitment of obtaining both her  undergraduate and graduate degrees.

For the next 8 years, school was the rule. Head down and pressing on. Tamaris obtained her Associate and Bachelor's degrees at Ohio Dominican University, a proud sister school to the local Siena Heights University. She then returned to Adrian and began her journey to becoming a licensed attorney, graduating from the University of Toledo College of Law with honors for a Certificate in Criminal Law.

Since returning to her hometown, Tamaris has spent many hours volunteering her time for local organizations such as, Adrian Morning Rotary, the NAACP, the MLK Dinner Committee, U1st Transitional Living Program, Catherine Cobb Domestic Violence Shelter, and the Adrian Public Schools Board of Education, just to name a few. Tamaris is also a member of Zonta International, Delta Sigma Pi and Phi Alpha Delta Fraternities.

So you want to be a judge but............

Why Probate Court?

While photos and warm fuzzy memories may make her life look simple, Tamaris has also experienced the harsh reality of being a child from a dysfunctional family. For her, this meant a biological father who battled with addiction that led to him abandoning her, a teen mom who put all of her energy into her religious ambitions and  had no idea how to raise a biracial child, and an all expense paid trip to the State of Michigan foster care system. In fact it was the very courtroom where she seeks to  sit  as judge that the decision to removed her from her mother's home and make her a ward of the State was made.

Life has been far from easy for Tamaris. But, she has always believed in taking accountability for oneself and making the best of your circumstances. Tamaris firmly believes that there is always something positive to learn from every experience in life. So she took the circumstance of being forced out of high school and turned that into getting  her G.E.D.  She took her experience of being abandoned as a child and made better choices for her own children, even opening her home to adopting and fostering kids.  When others said she would never accomplish her dream of being attorney, she used that negative energy to fuel her passion to learn and to succeed, AND to become an attorney.! Recently, Tamaris returned to the Lenawee County Probate to celebrate her own adult adoption, when the man who raised her made his 46- year title of Dad official.

So why probate, court you ask? Because those individuals who cross the threshold into our probate court are facing the same obstacles Tamaris has already overcome.  Tamaris will be a fair, compassionate, ethical, and no-nonsense judge. Because if anyone knows what it takes to rise from the fire and become your best self, it is TAMARIS.  No other candidate is more qualified for this job!
